Springtime in the Hilltowns

The First Signs of Spring are showing up here in the Hilltowns! The Daffodils and Crocus's are pushing their way up through the soil and the Robins have invaded our property!! Yippee! Spring has kept its promise once Again :)



I just received some bunches of Celosia and displayed them w/ the "Spring" pottery setting at the shop. I LOVE how the deep burgundy color of the Celosia compliments the Amber colors of the Sweet Annie and the Sky Blue color of the "Egg & Nest" displays~~ Beautiful!

I'll post the Celosia on the website for Sale if anyones interested. I also received some Yarrow, Tansy, Oregano & Strawflowers.

Primitive Herbal Creations

Whew! It's been a VERY busy past few months! As you can see I've created a New Website. It's been A LOT of hard work, but I'm please with the outcome so far. The shopping cart is much "smoother" and the entire website navigation makes it a pleasant shopping experience :) I'm really happy about the Wholesale access section~ Much easier than the old "paper catalog" updating, mailing etc...

I've also been Inspired to create some new "Prim Herbal" items~ as I call them. To me "Primitive" not only means Old and Grubby it also means Natural. Using Organic Herbs, Spices, Beeswax, Pure Essential Oils to create my primitive products bring out the Simple Beauty that inspired me in the first place :)

Herbal Pantry Cakes, Ginger-Spice Cakes, Sweet Annie Cakes are some of the New creations I've been busy with.





"Everything Has Its Place" is my motto at Home. That translates to "I can't stand Clutter!" That's why I've created these Prim Beeswax Jars. Great Storage~ Prim Herbal look. Keep them on your desk, or in the Laundry room for all that pocket change. Possibilities are endless :)





Another New item is the Locally made Lavender Heating Pad. For years we've sold these Heating pads in our Herb Shop and I thought it would be a good idea to offer them thru the Crow's Nest as well. I had the removable/washable covers made w/ "primitive" fabric. These Heating Pads are GREAT! Just pop the Heating Pad in the microwave for 2 to 3 minutes and it will stay warm for over 30 minutes.
I've used these Heating Pads on my family for years. For the kids earaches, tummy aches or just to keep them warm if they weren't feeling well. (that's why the removable/washable cover is so important)

Primitive SNOWBALLS

All this Beautiful Fluffy snow has inspired me to create "Prim Snowballs"



The other day I was searching for something with a "winter" theme to put into an old bowl in our Kitchen~ Snowballs made out of Soy Wax was the end result. Now I've got requests at the shop for them. I scent the Snowballs with Wintergreen Essential Oil (clean & fresh) and I also roll the Snowballs in wax flakes to give them a 3 dimensional look. They are SO CUTE! I've been packaging them three to a Cello-Bag with Rosehips layered on the bottom and Red Homespun as a Tie. They have become very popular. I've seen "Dirty Prim Snowballs" for sale before but I think some things shouldn't be "dirty" especially Snow! :)

Primitive Holiday OPEN HOUSE

We want to thank everyone that came to visit us at OPEN HOUSE this past Saturday. It was VERY busy, but VERY pleasant!! We'll plan for a big turnout again next year~



The weather has inspired me to toss the Pumpkins in the compost, clean the house from top to bottom and DECORATE!!



Keeping it simple with Twigs, Berries & Cones from outdoors. Just a touch here and there does the trick. This is also the time for Filling the House w/ Yummy Smells! Besides candles, I like to Melt tarts on the woodstove and spray my rooms with Holiday Scents.



I've finished making Apple Pomanders to display in my old bowls and started stringing Cinnamon sticks for the Christmas tree garland. (popcorn garland doesn't last very long w/ our lab Scooby)

Primitive Candle Lights

I am sooo excited about my new Candle Lights and Holders!! Finally the perfect "No Flame, No Cord" candle stick light. I've grunged up these battery operated candle lights w/ beeswax & spices. I then got inspired to have my potter create aPrimitive "inexpensive" candle holder to match. Especially made to fit windowsills!! Whooohooo! I love having lights in my windows but HATE cords. When you have a house that was built in 1783 it's not easy finding outlets that are even close to the windows nevermind keeping the light from falling off the windowsill. These Candle Lights take two AA batteries, are Spiced up to look Primitive and have a glowing orange flicker light attached. No bulb. We had the candle holders made in my plain primitive glaze and sized to fit on a windowsill. Although they look really cute just about anywhere. I am so thrilled with the results and am taking orders for dozens of them already.

Rosehip Bunches

Before the frost ruins what's left of the flowers & herbs, I gathered as much Bittersweet, Rosehips, Sage, Chocolate Mint, Globe Amaranth, Statice and Hydrangeas as I could. The Roses, Lavender and Foxgloves are still blooming~ what a treat! I was inspired to take a few pictures. Spooky was inspired to inhale as much Catmint as possible~ she's such a big help :)






The wild Rosehip bunches have sold like crazy! This was the first year I actually sold them. In the past I've added them to Gift Bags, wired them into evergreen Garlands and tucked them into Christmas trees~ pretty much given them away. This year I offered bunches of Rosehips to my customers to purchase and get creative with. Very positive feedback!

Harvest Time!!

It's Harvest Time! What a Great Time of Year!! Everybody gets excited about Fall. My customers are coming into the shop with "Fall Fever" Time to clear out the look of Summer and bring in the rich colors of Fall. It's also about "fall cleaning" (not that any of us are excited about that), closing up the windows, bringing out the candles and simmering some SPiCE! I've been busy making new Products including Candles, Soaps & Potpourri. The Cinn-a-bun Potpourri has been a big hit! Also the Pumpkin scented soy candles and Oatmeal Soap are becoming quite Popular. All will be available on my website very soon~

Fall Wreath Making

It's Wreath Making Time! The Flowers & Herbs that I've grown and been Harvesting are dried and ready to use.
I like working with Silver King Artesesia as the wreath base. If you create the base when the plants are still somewhat fresh it's much easier. The stalks are pretty sturdy and not brittle once the wreath is dried as well.






I use ALL different flowers & herbs to fill the wreaths. Besides Roses, Hydrangea, Lavender, Statice, Feverfew and
Globe Amaranth- I also use Chive blossoms, Iris's, Lily's, Mints, Sage, Queen Anne'sLace, Blue Salviaand Lilac's.
Even daffodil's have been put into my wreaths. I'm waiting for the Sweet Annie to be harvested and then that will go into everything I make as well~






As soon as I laid the dried flowers out on the table I had a few friends that insisted on helping. Maybe it was the dried CatMint that got the little ones attention (ya think?) The big one just has to tag along :) Happy Wreath Making!

Wild Turkey's

What a special treat! To watch that is!! These Turkeys have been enjoying our Pear and Apple trees for the past week.

As soon as I snapped this picture a baby porcupine came out of the field to enjoy the pears as well. That's when the party broke up :)

New LAVENDER Primitive Pottery

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the New Lavender Pottery!! The lavender Flower Pots came out so adorable I just had to use that design on other pieces of Primitive Pottery. The Lavender Soap Dishes (mini plates) are the PERFECT companion to my Organic Lavender Soap. Great Gift!! Here are a few pictures of the New Lavender pieces~ I should have them on the website soon.





Now is the time to start thinking about what you can make with your Harvested Flowers & Herbs. I've been collecting small bunches of Culinary herbs all Summer. Sage, Thyme, Coriander & a variety of Mints to name a few. They've been air dried and stored in clean paper bags. I think I'll combine some of them as Cooking Blends for gifts. I could also use them in Potpourri. I'll package the blends in cellophane bags and then place them in my new burlap bags. All I need is a Primitive Label and there's one more Handmade Gift Idea~

Snapdragons

Well, I planted a few flats of Snapdragons this year but couldn't bring myself to cutting them~ They looked so good in the garden that I just kept putting it off until there were only a few blooms left on the stems, and by then they were hardly worth drying...


The Statice & Globe Amaranth on the other hand have been a Beautiful Show and a HUGE drying SUCCESS! I really enjoy heading out of the house every morning with my large harvest basket to see what's ready to gather. What a way to start your day :) So far the crop of pastel colored Statice and Red Globe Amaranth is ready. The darker colored Statice should be ready in a few weeks. The vibrant colors and constant blooming really was breath-taking.

Organic Calendula OIl for Herbal Soaps

~Spooky's enjoying the Summertime Rays~

Instead of just drying Calendula flowers this year, I decided to make Calendula oil as well. I planted a large crop of organic Calendula seeds (Johnny seeds company) early this spring and I'm very pleased with the results.

I picked the flowers first thing in the morning, choosing only the healthy newly open buds. I washed them and made sure they were completely dried before filling a sterile jar of extra virgin olive oil with them. The jar of Calendula Oil was left on the window sill for only a few days, then I strained and discarded the flowers and keep the oil stored in the refrigerator.I'll be adding this Organic Calendula Oil to my Homemade Soaps & Salves.

Calendula is well known for it's healing properties.

Organic Lavender Salve

My Organic Lavender Salve is ready for sale! It's been a real joy formulating, packaging and of course "testing" the salve on myself and my family! I LOVE it!!
Because the salve contains Shea Butter and Coconut oil I knew it would soothe and soften the skin but I didn't know how quick it would work on really dry cracked skin. For the past few nights I've been putting a small amount on my cracked heals and even after the FIRST application I noticed a huge difference.
